How to identify a cat breed from a photo
1. Light the cat, not the room
Use even daylight or a lamp behind you. Avoid harsh flash on the eyes and avoid backlighting that turns the coat into a silhouette. Face and ears should be visible.
2. Fill the frame
Get close enough that the head and shoulders occupy most of the photo. Distant full-body shots in a dark room are the most common reason a match looks vague.
3. Crop in the app
After capture, tighten the crop so the identifier sees fur and facial structure — not the sofa, a person, or another pet. Then tap Identify. You need a network connection.
4. Read confidence, not a single label
You will usually see more than one breed. A high percentage on one breed means the photo strongly resembles that look. Several mid-range scores often means a mixed cat — which is normal. This is not a DNA test.
5. Retake if needed
If the result feels off, try a front-facing shot, dry fur, and a different angle. Then use Ask AI on the saved scan if you want to know what the match is based on.
